During IV conscious sedation, you will be permitting Dr. Anzalone and his staff to administer various medications to produce a state of relaxation, reduced perception of pain, and drowsiness. In addition, local anesthetics will be administered to numb the areas of your mouth to be treated. The goal of sedation is not to produce a state of unconsciousness, therefore you may or may not remember the procedure.

You must do several things to prepare for IV sedation

  1. You must refrain from eating for six (6) hours before your dental appointment.
  2. Do not drink alcohol or take any medications without prior approval.
  3. Medications that are likely to be approved are those regularly taken for blood pressure, heart conditions, diabetes, ect. and should be taken with a sip of water.
  4. Wear a loose fitting short sleeve shirt. Do not wear heavy makeup or false eyelashes. Do not wear contact lenses the day of the appointment.
  5. Do not wear nail polish.
  6. You must have a responsible adult with you that is capable of escorting you home and stay with you for 24 hours.
  7. Do not drive, operate complicated machinery or make legal decisions such as signing documents.
  8. Please notify us if you develop a cold, sore throat, cough, stuffy nose or fever or any other illnesses prior to your surgical appointment.
